Paper bags have replaced plastic carry bags in many markets, and kraft paper bags from India are in demand with retailers, bakeries, restaurants and delivery businesses. To get the right bag and an accurate price, you need to specify a few key details.
Main bag types
- Twisted-handle bags: paper cord handles glued inside; the classic retail shopping bag.
- Flat-handle bags: flat paper strip handles; economical, common for takeaway food and groceries.
- SOS (self-opening square) bags: no handles, flat bottom that stands up; used for bakery, grocery and fast food.
- Die-cut handle bags: handle cut into the bag; used for boutique retail and light items.
Choosing paper GSM
GSM (grams per square metre) indicates paper weight and strongly affects strength and cost. As a rough guide, lighter papers (around 50–80 GSM) suit small food and bakery bags, while carry bags for retail commonly use around 80–120 GSM or more, depending on the load. Always state the load you expect the bag to carry, so the supplier can recommend paper and handle construction that will hold it.
Brown, white or recycled kraft
Natural brown kraft is strong and cost-effective with an eco look. Bleached white kraft gives brighter print results. Recycled kraft is available for sustainability-focused brands. For direct food contact, specify food-grade paper and ask for food-contact test reports suitable for your market.
Sizes
Specify bags as width × gusset × height (for example 260 × 120 × 350 mm). Share what goes inside, such as a takeaway box, bottle or clothing, so the size suits the product. Ask for a sample before you approve a new size.
Printing and branding
One- or two-colour flexographic printing is economical for logos on kraft. Multi-colour designs are possible at higher cost. Provide vector artwork, the colour count and the print position (one side or both). Printed bags have a minimum quantity per design.
Grease resistance for food
For oily foods, ask for grease-resistant paper or a grease-resistant inner bag. As with other food packaging, check whether your market restricts PFAS-based grease-proofing and request PFAS-free options if needed.
Export packing
Bags are packed flat in bundles (for example 50 or 100 per bundle) in cartons or bales. Ask for the carton count and dimensions so freight cost per bag can be calculated for LCL or full container loads.
