In this guide
Paper cups look simple, but quotes for "8 oz paper cups" can vary widely because suppliers make different assumptions about wall type, board weight, coating and print. Whether you supply cafés, vending operators or retail, this guide helps you specify cups clearly before importing from India.
Cup types
- Single wall: one layer of coated board. Economical; best for cold drinks or hot drinks with a sleeve.
- Double wall: an outer paper wall with an air gap. Comfortable to hold with hot drinks, and a premium feel for printed branding.
- Ripple wall: a corrugated outer wrap. Good insulation and grip; popular with coffee chains.
- Cold cups: coated on both sides to resist condensation, often in larger sizes.
Common sizes
Popular sizes run from 2.5–4 oz (tasting, espresso, vending) through 6–8 oz (tea, small coffee) and 12 oz to 16 oz and above (takeaway coffee and cold drinks). Always state the capacity in ml and the rim diameter, because lids must match the rim exactly. If you already use a lid, send its model or rim diameter.
Paperboard and GSM
Cup board is specified in grams per square metre (GSM) plus the coating weight. Heavier board gives a sturdier cup and costs more. Typical single-wall hot cups use board in roughly the 170–280 GSM range depending on size, with larger cups needing heavier board. Ask the supplier to state board GSM + coating GSM separately in the quote, so quotes can be compared fairly.
PE vs PLA vs aqueous coatings
| Lining | What it is | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| PE (polyethylene) | Thin plastic film; the conventional lining | Lowest cost and reliable, but treated as containing plastic under many single-use plastic rules |
| PLA | Plant-based bioplastic lining | Marketed as compostable in industrial composting facilities; higher cost |
| Aqueous / water-based barrier | Dispersion coating with little or no plastic film | Designed to improve recyclability and meet plastic-reduction rules; check local acceptance |
Regulations differ by market. In the EU, the Single-Use Plastics Directive affects how plastic-lined cups must be labelled. Check the rules in your destination country and ask the manufacturer for relevant test reports or certifications for the lining you choose.
Custom printing
Printed cups are a strong branding tool. Share vector artwork (AI, PDF or SVG), the number of colours and Pantone references. Flexographic printing is common for longer runs, and offset for detailed multi-colour designs. Expect a minimum quantity per design, and approve a printed proof or sample before production.
Food safety
Ask for food-contact test reports for the board and lining that match your market's requirements, and confirm inks are suitable for food packaging.
Export packing
Cups are light but bulky, so freight cost per cup matters. Typical packing is sleeves of 50 cups in 5-ply cartons of 1,000 or more cups. Ask for carton dimensions and weight in the quote so freight can be calculated, and ask how many cartons fit in a 20 ft or 40 ft container.
